Featured Products – Feed & Fortify and Feed & Protect

What Are Feed & Protect & Feed & Fortify?

This weeks featured products are Feed & Protect and Feed & Fortify.
Feed & Protect and Feed & Fortify are both dual function slug and snail repellents that feed plants whilst deterring pests. They are both 100% safe for all wildlife, pets and humans and can’t be washed away in the rain like other slug products.

How Do Feed & Protect and Feed & Fortify Work?

Feed & Protect is a powder that is dissolved in water and applied to a plants foliage. The plant then absorbs the nutrients provided in the powder to improve growth whilst simultaneously making the plant distasteful to molluscs. The bitter taste that is created by Feed & Protect is so subtle that it cannot be detected by humans. Feed & Protect is a great alternative that will not harm slugs.

Feed & Fortify is made from diatomaceous earth and iron silicates. Diatomaceous earth is a coarse powder that feels like sand to humans but is extremely coarse to molluscs. When slugs or snails try to go over the physical barrier created by Feed & Fortify they receive lots of tiny lacerations that break down it’s slimy coat and cause it to dehydrate and die. The Iron silicates in the powder release vital micronutrients into the soil to improve plant growth.

Don’t Just Take Our Word for It…

Ms Christine J – Have used this in 2 small areas of the garden and so far so good will await to see what happens

Karen Bergeman – Very easy to use, we bought it as needed something that would not harm my cat and others that visit, and of course the Wildlife
Thanks

Bruce Murray – Easy to apply – so far no slugs!

Where Do Slugs Live?

Slugs live underground and this is where they spend most of their time. Whilst underground, they will digest any seedlings that have been planted, lay eggs and feed on the roots of developed plants. Feed & Protect makes the whole plant distasteful to slugs, including the roots and foliage but does not affect the flavour of plants to humans.

How to Stop Slugs Eating Plants?

There are two methods of stopping slugs eating plants, you can either deter them and keep them away from your plants or you can kill them. Copper tape is often used as a deterrent for slugs but people have mixed results with it and some say that if the slug really wants to get over it, they will! Feed & Protect makes plants distasteful to slugs and as a result they won’t eat them making it the perfect deterrent.
Poisonous slug pellets are often used to kill slugs and whilst these are fairly effective, they are very unsightly and can be fatal to pets, other wildlife and children. Feed & Fortify is a great way to kill slugs as it is 100% safe for pets, and children and acts as a dual product by feeding the plant whilst repelling slugs.

Best Way to Kill Slugs?

There are numerous ways of killing slugs. From poisonous slug pellets, to traps that are designed to lure in slugs, trap them and then kill them. Most of these methods are successful and will kill slugs, however, many of them are unsightly and spoil the aesthetics of your garden or allotment. Feed & Fortify is and effective slug killer that is made of diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is a natural product that is made up from fossilized crustaceans and sea creatures. To humans, pets and other wildlife, it just feels like sand, but to molluscs it is extremely rough and causes lots of lacerations to their wet skin. This essentially dehydrates them and causes them to die.

Feed & Protect – BBC Radio 2’s Terry Walton Endorsement

You might remember back in March, Terry Walton (BBC Radio 2’s Allotment/Gardening Expert) gave Early Starter a great endorsement.

Well since then he’s been trying out some of our other amazing gardening probiotics.

Here’s what he had to say about Feed & Protect, our two-in-one plant food and slug repellent.

” I am well-known for my vegetable growing but I do grow flowers; notably sweet peas to tempt pollinating insects to my plot. But I have a secret agenda in growing these and that is to please my wife with a fragrant bouquet of these brilliant flowers when I am late back from the plot!

They are however not the easiest plants to grow and are a delicacy for slugs and snails. Also they succumb to diseases and aphids very quickly.

I received a tub of Envii Feed and Protect and this looked like a solution to many of my sweet pea problems.  When they were planted out I watered them with a solution of this product and they grew vigorously. I was sceptical of its claim to ward off slugs and snails due to making its foliage distasteful to these munching molluscs!

I haven’t tasted its foliage myself, but there is no doubt that its leaves have not been ‘nibbled’.

The plants are watered every ten days with Envii Feed & Protect and I must say they are the healthiest sweet peas I have ever grown. The flowers are just appearing and I have had no bud drop this year which is a bonus.

The product also meets my ethos of organic gardening and there are no dead poisoned bodies of slugs to affect the wild life in my area.

This certainly looks the answer to my prayers for this crop and I will certainly try it out on my vulnerable vegetable crops.”

Another big thanks to Terry Walton for his endorsements!

Protect against slugs with Feed & Protect

Slugs and snails are coming! Although slugs are active all year round, your garden is most at risk for the next few months when the conditions are warm and damp and there is plenty of new growth for them to feed on. In our last blog post – 6 Tips For The Fight Against Slugs And Snails – we listed what we think are the best ways to protect against slugs and snails. This is just a reminder about how Feed and Protect works and how it can help your plants.

Feed and Protect has two really important functions:

It Prevents Slugs and Snails

Feed and Protect actually makes the plant distasteful to slugs and snails. This means that, while it won’t keep slugs and snails off your garden, it will certainly stop them munching on your plants. Envii Feed and Protect wasn’t designed for this initially; it was just a spot of luck that makes it a really useful product.

It Feeds the Plant

By delivering essential micronutrients – like Potassium, Boron, Zinc, Iron, Copper etc – to the plant, Feed and Protect allows them to flourish to their maximum capability.

This makes Feed and Protect like no other product on the market. The Feed and Protect formula is used in large scale agriculture as a plant food. Envii have re-packaged it and made it available to the home gardener meaning that you can use what the professionals are using.
